How many times are you told that you just need to find a balance?
Work-life balance.
Balance between eating healthy and indulging.
Hustling vs. resting.
Etc., ect., ect.
“Life’s all about balance.”
I know I’ve been guilty of saying those words mannnnnny times. The thing is, even as I’ve said those words, I have KNOWN that they weren’t totally accurate. Because for a living, breathing being, perfect balance DOES NOT EXIST. It is literally impossible to just find perfect balance, and expect to just live there. Allow me to give you a few examples to show you what I mean.
First of all, take a look at the body.
It is constantly in motion; even when you’re sleeping. Your insides are in a constant state flow of fluids and functions in order to keep you alive. Your heart is constantly pumping blood throughout your body, in order to provide it with adequate oxygen. Your digestive system is constantly processing the food and water you’ve ingested, in order to get the nutrients and waste to their respective locations. Your muscles are constantly contracting and releasing to help you accomplish whatever task you’re working on – walking, sitting, reaching for that thing on the top shelf at the grocery store, etc.
Second example: surfing.
I actually heard this example on a podcast, and I wish to high heaven that I could remember which one so I could give proper credit. But in the meantime, think about surfing. You might say that surfing is all about having good balance, right? Okay yes, being a talented surfer absolutely requires excellent balance. After all, the only thing standing between you and being swallowed by the ocean is a thin piece of wood…that you stand on while cruising through crashing waves.
So, balance is the answer, right?
– OR –
What if it’s about give and take? If you surf, or are even just familiar with the concept of surfing, you know that you’re going to constantly be shifting your weight on that board. One second you’ll have most of your weight on your front foot, with your body leaning forward, full speed ahead. The next, you might pull your body up to distribute your weight a little more evenly before getting back down to where you were; or shift your weight completely to your back foot. Sometimes you’ll be flat on your belly, to actually get to where you want to be.
So maybe life actually is all about balance…but balance perhaps isn’t what we’ve always thought of it to be.
Having a balanced life actually means to have the proper give and take. Sometimes that’s a give and take of how you use your time throughout the day; sometimes that’s a give and take of an entire season of life. It’s not static, it’s dynamic! For example: if you are a stay at home mom, feeling sad for yourself sometimes because you feel like you’ve given up your dream career for sticky hands and snotty noses…remember – it’s just a season. You get to decide how the balance goes. You can let it be a longer, wider swing, and just focus on being a mom, and get back to progressing in your dream career once those adorable, poopy kids are grown. Or you can let the weight shift back and forth at a quicker rate, and make the time to pursue that career right now.
The actual secret to living a balanced life?
Knowing that there is no single right answer. You actually have an unlimited potential just waiting inside of you, with limitless possibilities of how to use it. There is no “best”, only options. You have to decide what you actually WANT, rather than what you THINK you should want, and what you’re willing to work for. Once you decide what that is, you have one hundred percent of everything you need to make that happen, and to create the “balance” you’re happy with. Sometimes that might mean hiring a babysitter (even if your Aunt Sharon thinks it’s a sin to let anyone other than family watch those sweet children). Those kids will be so blessed to have a mom who is actively showing them that it’s possible to achieve your dreams. And they will also be so blessed if you choose to hold off on pursuing your dreams until they’re older IF that’s a decision that is made out of love, not obligation.
Whatever it is that you’re struggling to find “balance” in, I promise that you find it if you’re willing to look hard enough. And if you want some help finding it, go schedule your free coaching call with me, and I can absolutely guide you through it. You are worth every ounce of effort you put in to create a life rampant with joy and fulfillment.
